WombatDean Coslett - Assistant Scout Leader

(Wombat)

Dean spent his youth growing up in the UK, which included several years in the 1st Brampton Cub Scouts and Scouts. Scouting gave him all the necessary skills to spend the next 10 years surviving the "big smoke" (London). Along with his wife Mandy he `decided that a change to some warmer climes was yearning and migrated to Australia. Dean then spent his first few years in this great Southern land working as a postie whilst studying at Uni in his favourite subject - cartography (maps). This led him to a job in Canberra and has spent most of the last 10 years in various roles playing with map data. His current job involves managing some of the data that eventually appears on Internet maps, such as Google Maps and in satellite navigation systems. Dean and Mandy have lived in Gundaroo for the past 8 years and have three young girls - Megan, Molly and Hannah. Dean is a retired Gundaroo Bullock (managed to last the first two soccer seasons) and a member of the Rural Fire Brigade.

Martin Steffens - Assistant Scout Leader

(Dingo)

MartinMartin was born in Canada, grew up in the Netherlands and seven years ago came for a holiday to Australia with his family and never went back.

In real life Martin works as an independent management consultant / project manager; currently for the Australian Federal Police. As a boy he joined the boy-scouts in the Netherlands and was part of a scout group called "De Hunen". The name from the scout group was based on the wild tribes who invaded that part of the Netherlands a long long time ago, destroying everything in their path and took the women from other tribes back home. I'm not sure how that related to the scout law and promise but at that time I thought it was very cool to be a part of "De Hunen". More memories about my time as a boy scout: we always had to do hikes when it was pouring rain (and it rains very often in the Netherlands), being dropped off in the middle of the night (without scout leaders) in an complete unfamiliar terrain finding our way back to the scout base...in the rain. Also the scout leaders didn't use the left-hand shake as this was perceived to be related to the military roots from scouting, however all boy-scouts were allowed to walk around with Rambo knives as a part of their outfit...the scars in my left hand are a reminder of what NOT to do as a scout.

I guess my scouting experience is probably not really useful ;-) however I had a great time. Isn't that what it is all about?

Martin lives with Siemie, Ruben, Daan & Thom in Gundaroo.
