Greg Kovacs - Venturer Leader
Greg started Scouting at 10 years of age with 1st Windang Scout Troop (Illawarra Region, NSW). Continued through Venturers at 1st Windang and when he was 17 moved to Canberra to go to University. He joined Crowajingalong Venturers until his 18th birthday when he was inducted and invested into Bethungra Rover Crew. After a couple of Years at Bethungra, the Crew was getting too big (~60 people) So Justin Orr, Nicola Harvey (now Nicola Kovacs, Greg's wife) and Greg, split away and established Loxley Rover Crew. Loxley was established to be a traditional Rover Crew following the medieval themes. The name Loxley came from Robin Hood...... Robin of Loxley. The Rover crew was slow to get off the ground at first, but soon they had several Squires on board. Unfortunately, University ended and Greg had to move out of Canberra to work in the real world. At that point he (as Crew Leader) invested the Squires that they had and handed the running of the crew over to them. Loxley has grown and prospered ever since and is now one of the largest Rover Crews in the ACT. Greg moved to Orange, NSW and became the Crew Leader of 3rd Orange Rover Crew. Following this, his profession as a Gold Exploration Geologist saw him travelling throughout Australia with no stability in any one place to join up with any other Rover Crews or be a part of Scouting.
After Several years away from Scouting his wife, Nicola, had Twin Girls (Heather and Elizabeth, who are invested into 1st Gundaroo Joey Mob) and it was time to get a job where he could sleep in his own bed each night and watch his kids grow up. So he moved back to Canberra and got a desk job working for the health of the country, as a General Manager with the Australian Health Insurance Association. At this stage, with a position that enabled him to stay in one town for a period of time he decided to put back into Scouting, as he had gained much from it previously. Greg then trained and became the Venturer Leader at Crowajingalong Scout Group in the ACT.
Along came another baby, Tomas (now in Kindergarten at Gundaroo Public School - but a couple of years too young for Joeys - although he would really like to go!) and eventually a move away from the city. He now lives on a property on Dicks Creek Road. Eager to contribute his experience and background in Scouting, Greg volunteered to establish the 1st Gundaroo Venturer Unit.
Greg has a Degree in Applied Science, Honours Degree in Science and a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration. He is also involved with the Rural Fire Service through the Back Creek Brigade.
