About Cubs
Cubs are 7.5 to 11 year old Scouts who learn the basics of scouting in a group environment. The whole emphasis of the program is to have fun while learning, and the program is written in such a way to capture their imagination. Cubs spend a lot of time outdoors, either playing games or participating in other activities. Outdoor activities include camping, bushwalking, camp fires, swimming and generally playing. The creative side of Cubs is also encouraged with handcraft and self expression an essential part of the program. With all this going on, they don't even realise they are learning as they go.
The Jungle Book
When Cubs were established in 1916, the Scout movement's founder Lord Baden-Powell wanted to establish a program that captured the 8-10 year old's imagination. So he selected The Jungle Book, written by his good friend Rudyard Kipling, as the basis of the program. We still use The Jungle Book today in all aspects of the program. The leaders have names taken from the book, in our case Akela (the leader of the Seeonee wolf pack), Bagheera (the black panther who bought Mowgli's life with a bull) and Baloo (the bear who teaches the Jungle Law). We open and close each night with a ceremony known as the “Grand Howl”, a ceremony inspired by the wolves sitting around the council rock.
Pack Structure
The Cubs are broken into groups called Sixes. Each Six has a name given from the names of Mowgli's wolf brothers. Mowgli's brothers were all named after their fur colour, so we have red, black, grey, white and brown Sixes. Each Six is lead by an older Cub (known as Sixers) and an assistant (known as a Second). The Sixes and Seconds are known as the Pack Council.
